Why Marriage?
It's very unfortunate that marriage has received such negative attention in this generation. Throughout our own courtship, both of us have become increasingly amazed by the potential and eternal significance of marriage, and are extremely thrilled that we have the opportunity to be part of its adventure. We are convinced that there is no other human relationship which has more capacity for personal growth than marriage. We believe that it is in the vulnerability, intimacy, and enduring safety of a committed marriage that we can become more selfless, giving, and holy. Ultimately, it will challenge us to reach our full potential as individuals, and in fact to become more like Christ in character. And that is our ultimate goal and purpose for entering this marriage relationship. It is to become more like Him who has loved us, saved us, and set us free to love one another.
We realize that we face the tremendous opposition of a society that fears commitment and self-sacrifice, and the struggles and trials that every marriage road has upon it. But, we also do not journey alone. With God at the center and forefront of our life together, we believe we have all we need to make it to the end-triumphantly. He is our strength and sufficiency to face whatever might come upon our path together.
As we commit our lives to one another, we also keep in mind that God Himself has instituted marriage to serve an even greater purpose than just character growth and protection. He Himself has demonstrated to each of us perfect unconditional love and grace through the selfless sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. The marriage relationship was designed to reflect on earth what God has done for us. With that holy and significant picture in mind, we strive to accurately represent what God has done for us by committing to learn how to love each other as He has loved us. As we conform our lives and marriage to Christ's example, we can not only affect the lives of future generations, but also the very foundations of our society itself.
